What is a Vasectomy?
Vasectomy is the common name for male sterilization—a permanent method of contraception. A vasectomy involves cutting and separating the ends of the tubes (vas deferens) that move sperm from the testicles to the penis. After the procedure (once you have the all-clear after approximately 3 months), ejaculated semen will contain no sperm.
Sperm is the part of semen that leads to pregnancy, and after a vasectomy, it will be broken down in your body instead of making its way into your semen.

STEP 2
During Vasectomy
Once vasectomy is done you should:
1. Make sure the client understands key aspects about vasectomy, aftercare and recovery time and that they should call or return for follow-up if they have any concerns or problems or experience any warning signs
2. Advise use of and provide condoms or effective regular contraception for their partner for the next three months (ideally until they receive final all-clear results from a semen analysis, if available)
3. They can usually leave within an hour
4. The client should rest for 2 days after, avoiding any long periods of standing or walking
5. They should wear snug underwear or pants (or scrotal support, if available) for 2 to 3 days to support the scrotum as this reduces the swelling, bruising and pain.
6. They should not drink alcohol for at least 48 hours after the procedure – this can cause blood vessels to dilate, resulting in an increased risk of bleeding
7. They should keep the puncture site clean and dry for 2 to 3 days to avoid infection. They can use a damp towel to wipe their body clean but should not soak the wound in water
8. They should not have sex for at least 2-3 days
9. They should not do any heavy lifting or strenuous activity for at least 2 weeks after treatment
10. They should understand how long the procedure will take to become effective and until then, their partner will not be protected from pregnancy if they decide to have unprotected sex. This is because some sperm have already passed beyond the site where the vasa (tubes) are tied off. These sperm have to be cleared by normal ejaculation which takes approximately 3 months
11. They or their partner will need to be provided with an effective method of contraception for three months after vasectomy.
STEP 3
After Vasectomy
You should rest as much as possible for the first day or so. Do not stand and walk much. Use cold therapy regularly to help with healing.
- Follow-up:– Semen analysis
After 3 months the client should preferably return for a semen analysis to see if their semen is clear of sperm before stopping use of the alternative method of contraception. (However, a semen analysis is not mandatory)– When to seek medical assistance
- Although a routine follow-up visit is not required after vasectomy, the client should seek medical assistance if they have intolerable side effects or other concerns e.g.: Their partner thinks they are pregnant; or The client has any of the following warning signs:
Any of the following symptoms which either persist or worsen:- Bleeding, Pain, Pus, Heat, Fever, Excessive swelling, Redness in the genital area Or, the client feels that there is something seriously wrong with their health.
- Vasectomy does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and the client or their partner will need to use condoms for protection.
